Choosing Roofing Shingles

Q. What are the advantages and disadvantages of wood shingle, slate, tile, and asphalt shingle roofs?

A. These roof coverings vary greatly in price and give your home an entirely different look.

Wood shingles (or ‘shakes’) present an aesthetic that many consumers find charming.  Wood is susceptible to rotting and is vulnerable to insect damage, however, if not treated correctly. Thus, it is highly important to use quality materials and hire a specialized installer.  Better grades of wood roofing products are also treated to resist fire, which is recommended to protect the home.

Slate and tile roofing are ultra durable methods. While some maintenance is needed to fix and replace slate and tile over the life of the roof,  these roofs may last 50 to 75 years, if not longer. Again, it is necessary to use a specialized installer for this type of roof.

Asphalt shingles are the ubiquitous standard for residential roofing. On new homes, these shingles are designed to last at least 30 years, often longer. They are an affordable and practical solution for many homes.

Metal Roofing: Eco-Friendly and Cost Effective

Metal Roofing is both eco-friendly and cost-effective.  A metal roof adds modern character to a residential property and memorable flair to a commercial building.  Home and business owners can choose from a wide range of metal roofing materials including aluminum, copper, and steel.  The materials come in a variety of styles including standing seam, batten seam, simulated Spanish tiles, and metal shingle roof systems; all of which feature a broad spectrum of color choices.  Metal roofing also has a 30-50 year life-span when properly installed, is up to 100% recyclable when removed, and can help qualify your building for LEED credits. Proper installation includes using Ice & Water Shield (rather than simple felt) as an underlayment, quality materials from a recognized manufacturer (Atas, Petersen, Merchant & Evans, Wrisco, etc), and a certified installer/contractor.

Furthermore, innovative thin-film solar-integrated standing seam metal roofing materials are now available.  This simple solution is light-weight and requires no penetration to the roof. Images are shown below.
